When we moved into our new home two months ago, I found myself a bit twisted when it came to outfitting our newly constructed family room, which opens right into the kitchen. It's a space you see almost immediately after walking in the front door and since we live in our kitchen, it's a space I see about 700 times a day.
After setting up the room with my picks‐a grasscloth media console from Bungalow 5, a massive 10‐foot by 10‐foot sectional in a durable indigo‐I quickly discovered that my vintage walnut cocktail table had to go. Within an hour of its arrival, my one‐year‐old had added a distinct Paw Patrol patina by hammering Marshall into its top. Super. So the coffee table was relocated to the formal living room where it could rest unmolested.
For the next two weeks, we went without a coffee table ‐no great tragedy of course ‐however it's nice to have a place to prop your feet when you're watching Bravo marathons after the kids go to bed. I hemmed and hawed until I stumbled across this Cala Hammered Coffee Table.
Designing kid‐friendly rooms could be so awkward, particularly rooms that serve as a centerpiece in the home. In an out‐of‐the‐way playroom, there's more leeway, however in a family room, the pieces you select not only have to stand up to the beating fists of a band of monkeys, they also have to be worldly enough for casual get‐togethers with grownups.
